The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially awarded the contract for a massive infrastructure project that promises to transform the daily commute for thousands of residents. The Hessa Street Improvement Project is set to undergo a comprehensive revamp, with the primary goal of drastically reducing travel times cutting the journey during peak hours from 24 minutes down to just 8 minutes.
At the heart of this Dh689 million project is the widening of Hessa Street. The upgrade will see the road expand from two lanes to four lanes in each direction along a 4.5km stretch. This expansion is projected to double the road's vehicle capacity, increasing throughput from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour. This critical enhancement aims to eliminate the notorious bottlenecks currently faced by motorists connecting between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.
This infrastructure overhaul is a lifeline for some of Dubai’s most densely populated residential hubs. The project will directly benefit over 640,000 residents living in communities such as Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Sports City, and Motor City. By 2030, the improved road network is expected to accommodate the anticipated population growth in these expanding districts.
Beyond vehicle traffic, the project emphasizes sustainable mobility. It includes the construction of a 13.5-kilometer cycling track. This new path will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street, complete with two dedicated bridges for cyclists and pedestrians crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, fostering a safer environment for non-motorized transport.
The Hessa Street upgrade is part of the RTA’s broader strategy to modernize Dubai’s transport network. By integrating four major intersections and widening the main artery, the project ensures smoother traffic flow and supports the emirate's continued urban expansion.
